Rotarians in South Asia have adopted “Rotary’s Total Literacy Mission”. In India, the Rotary India Literacy Mission wishes to achieve the literacy goals through its T-E-A-C-H program (Teacher Support, E-learning, Adult Literacy, Child Development and Happy Schools). One of the 5 schemes envisaged under the Teacher Support Project is strengthening of District Institutes of Educational Training (DIET) in states. Under the T.E.A.C.H. program, Rotary Club of Khadki has taken a major initiative to improve the quality of education in schools by upgrading the skills of teachers and motivating them to incorporate contemporary teaching methods & tools in their classrooms. The new pedagogy recognizes the fact that the Knowledge Age will redefine the skillsets required by the students in the years to come, and therefore it is necessary for teachers to change the way how they teach in classrooms. Rotary Club of Khadki, in collaboration with their project partners Socrates Foundation for Enhanced Learning, has undertaken a training program to train 300 teacher trainers from 33 District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) under Maharashtra State Council of Educational Research & Training (MSCERT) in batches of 30 Trainers each. The program is scheduled to run from August 2015 to April 2016. During the 5 day training program for each batch, the trainers will learn contemporary teaching methodologies which are not only aligned to the interests, capabilities & outlook of todays’ students, but will also inculcate the skills that will be required of them 10 to 20 years from now, but do not form a part of the curriculum today. The total estimated cost of the project is 26 lacs and per batch expenditure will be around 2.50 lacs. The total no. of direct beneficiaries after the completion of the project will be 300 & 33000 teachers will be trained by these master trainers. Currently the first batch of teacher trainer has been successfully completed in August 2015.
